MIT researchers isolated an AI agent in a simulated environment with no external goals or constraints. Left to explore freely, the system generated complex behaviors including invented games, structured constructions, and artistic patterns. The findings suggest AI systems may develop emergent complexity and self-directed activity when given autonomy.
